FORMER Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Mohammed Dikko Umar formally retired from the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Friday in a flying out ceremony in Abuja, saying that Nigeria needs to overcome the present security challenges.
In his valedictory address to officers and men of the Service at the Air Force Base, Abuja, Air Marshal Umar also advocated more funding to enable the NAF respond rapidly to any conflict, dominate any situation and optimize day to day operation in any given situation.
Umar said, “a versatile and multi-faceted instrument”, can be deployed in defence against aggression, promoting security and supporting people.
He noted that, “With information superiority, the NAF will ultimately provide dominant maneuver, precise engagement and full dimension protection in conjunction with other security agencies. By moving faster and more numbly than the adversary, dominant maneuver will allow a reorganized NAF to control the depth and breadth of the battle space and force an adversary to react from a disadvantage position or even quit.”
Air Marshal Umar emphasized that the roadmap for improved capacity building efficiency and effectiveness for the Air Force can be achieved, if there is need for improved government budgetary appropriation.
He therefore appealed to the Federal Government and the members of the National assembly to continue to assist, support and ensure increased funding for the NAF as a high tech driven component of the armed forces.
He was appointed the 17th Chief of Air Staff on September 8, 2010 and retired from the Air Force on October 4 after 35 years of service to the nation.
