Skin lightening creams face west African backlash

Although Senegalese law includes controls over the creams, they are poorly enforced and products are freely available in markets in Dakar. Photograph: Kambou Sia/AFP
It is a familiar formula for persuading women to buy a new beauty product: plaster billboards of a beautiful model in the capital city, accompanied by a catchy slogan written in the language of the ordinary woman.
But when new adverts for skin cream Khess Petch – a skin-lightening cream whose name means “all white” – appeared in Senegal, they had the exact opposite effect. The ads, which boasts extreme skin-whitening after 15 days, complete with dramatic before and after shots, provoked mass public outrage and calls for the government to introduce an industry-wide ban.
“We are used to seeing adverts for skin-lightening, but when we first saw these adverts for Khess Petch we were really scandalised. We decided to act,” said Aisha Deme, manager of an online events website in the Senegalese capital, Dakar.
“Society is constantly telling us that fair-skinned women are beautiful – in the media, on TV – and Senegalese women have started to believe it,” Deme added. “So we want to show that dark-skinned women are really beautiful, and that natural black skin should be celebrated.”
Deme is co-ordinating a campaign called Ñuul Kukk – which means “pitch black” in local language Wolof – and has attracted thousands of supporters on Facebook and high-profile friends, including the actor Awa Sene Sarr and rapper Awadi.
Senegal’s health minister, Eva Marie Coll Seck, has also met the group and expressed her “outrage” about the adverts.
Dr Fatou Fall, a dermatologist from the institute of social hygiene in Dakar, said: “Skin complexion matters [Many women believe that] women with fair skin are more successful, women with fair skin are the ones who stand out.”
Dermatologists say that many of the products include steroids such as clobetasol propionate, a cream that should be used for the treatment of severe skin inflammation and prescribed by health professionals, and hydroquinone, a potentially carcinogenic chemical that limits melanin production in the skin, and is banned in the EU.
Although Senegalese law includes controls over the creams, including a ban on creams with more than 2% corticosteroid, the laws are poorly enforced, with products with much higher levels freely available in stalls and marketplaces in Dakar.
Critics say that the cost of Khess Petch – at 1,000 CFA francs a tub – less than £2 – deliberately targets women who are unaware of the risks.
“There are expensive face-lightening creams which are less dangerous, but products like Khess Petch are very cheap and very dangerous – they are deliberately targeted at women in the villages and the poor urban areas,” said Deme. “Even when they discover the side-effects and want to stop using the creams, they find they cannot stop. It’s only when you stop that the skin changes and begins to become completely burned.”
“When women who use these creams stop, they look horrible,” said Fall. “They actually start looking more black, all the side effects manifest at the same time, which they just can’t accept.”

Traffic Law: Fashola Tasks LCCI On New Business Plan For Okada Riders

Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State has urged the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) to urgently design a new business plan that would engage commercial motorcycle operators popularly called Okada riders who were recently restricted from plying 475 roads in the state.
Fashola made the appeal at the weekend at celebration of the 2012 Lagos State day and the closing ceremony of the 2012 Lagos State Trade Fair and Exhibition held at the Tafawa Balewa Square, (TBS), Lagos.
Fashola said that this is the only way the chamber can partner with the state government on the new road traffic law signed into law on August 2nd in the state.
According to the governor, who was represented by his deputy, Mrs. Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, “The reason why we seek the partnership of LCCI is that the present administration in Lagos State knows the importance of the chamber as the umbrella body for business in the country, especially Lagos state.” By NigerianReviews

ANNUAL LIGHT UP AWARDS is designed to recognize, appreciate and encourage public office holders, corporate entities and private citizens who are contributing to a Nigeria of steady electricity power supply and well lit up streets at night based on the age long proven norm that ENCOURAGEMENT LEADS TO MORE ACHIEVEMENT.

We believe we all know that steady electricity power supply leads to poverty reduction and well lit up streets at night contributes to crime reduction in a society and these two are highly needed in Nigeria of today. On the other hand, our country being the most populous nation in Africa makes it a prime low-cost source destination and a serious competition for china, only if we have steady electricity power supply hence this initiative to encourage the electricity power efforts of the three tiers of government in a somewhat competitive environment.

In our bid to achieve this and in a transparent manner we set up our website www.projectlightupnigeria.com  to showcase pictures and details of all electricity power projects executed by participants for appraisal by Nigerians. The website has pages for Mr. President, the 36 States Governors,  The FCT Minister and 150 corporate firms.

We therefore visited the Federal Government, the  thirty six (36) States  and one hundred and fifty (150) Corporate Firms with requests for  pictures and details of  all Electrical Power Projects executed by them and for the corporate firms, streets lit up them as part of their corporate social responsibility to enable us upload such on their various pages on our website for Nigerians  to compare and contrast and nominate accordingly.

Eventually, eleven (11) States, a local Government and  5 Corporate firms who have electricity power projects they are proud of submitted  pictures and details of such in response to our request. We also received information on how many megawatts of electricity were generated by all Nigerian Presidents between 1979 and 2012. These information are currently on our website. We went ahead to print a magazine named LIGHT UP Magazine with these details to complement the efforts of our website in guiding Nigerians as they send in their nominations for the various award categories.

Dear ladies, size does matter in bed.

From NY Daily News
Women reach orgasm more easily when their lover’s manhood exceeds 5.8 inches, study shows. Call it the battle of the bulge - it turns out size does matter in bed. Scottish psychologists studied the sexual appetites of 323 women and found that most reach orgasm more easily when their lover’s manhood exceeds the average size of 5.8 inches. “This might be due to greater ability of a longer penis to stimulate the entire length of the vagina and the cervix,” researcher Stuart Brody, a psychologist at the University of West Scotland, told the website Live Science. Brody said the research showed that women who had sex with well-endowed partners had the most vaginal orgasms. He added, “Male anxiety about penis size may not reflect internalized, culturally arbitrary masculine stereotypes but an accurate appreciation that size matters to many women.”
If you have a man with small 'something', well...take heart. Hehe! We, we are still searching, so we will look well, before we jump! :-)

Fashola raises alarm over wife’s impersonation in Facebook

Gov. Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, yesterday denied the involvement or existence of any Facebook account for his wife, Abimbola, the First Lady of the state.
According to a statement by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media,, Mr. Hakeem Bello, the First Lady of the state does not operate a Facebook, Twitter or indeed any social media account
“Perpetrators of the criminal act should desist henceforth or should be ready to face the music when the long arm of the law catches up with them.,”the Special Adviser warned.
Describing impersonation as a criminal offence punishable by law, Hakeem warned unsuspecting members of the public should avoid falling victims of fraudsters impersonating the First Lady on the facebook or any social media outlet.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the First Lady of Lagos State, Dame Emmanuella Abimbola Fashola does not operate any Facebook, Twitter or indeed any social media account,” he stated.
The warning became necessary following the recent alert over the activities of impostors posing as the wife of the Governor of Lagos State. By NigerianReviews

Pneumonia kills 146,370 Nigerian children yearly – Paediatricians

Pneumonia is the second major killer of Nigerian children after malaria. Paediatricians, mothers and caregivers who spoke with BUKOLA ADEBAYO at a screening exercise in Lagos, called on government to provide pneumococcal vaccination to fight the disease
Medical experts are worried about the rate at which Nigerians, particularly children, are losing their lives to pneumonia. According to them, about 146, 370 children are killed yearly by the disease. This number, they said, is unacceptable for a disease that can be prevented with simple precautions like immunisation and good hygiene.
They identified ignorance on the cause of the disease, low breastfeeding and non-inclusion of the pneumococcal vaccine in the national routine immunisation programme of the country as some of the factors responsible for the high death rate occasioned by pneumonia.
They warned that if government and parents failed to key into the fight, against pneumonia, infant mortality might continue to increase especially at the grass roots.
The experts spoke with our correspondent at a free screening programme organised by the Paediatric Association of Nigeria for artisans, mothers and pregnant women at the Isolo Market, Mushin in Lagos on Monday as part of activities to mark the World Pneumonia Day.
PAN President, Dr. Dorothy Esangbedo, while welcoming participants, said the association had organised the event to educate parents on the causes of the disease.
According to her, many Nigerians are ignorant about the factors responsible for the ailment, stressing that contrary to the widely held belief that pneumonia is caused by exposure to cold weather and cold water, the disease is a communicable one caused by a pneumococcal virus.
A survey conducted during the screening revealed that 90 per cent of participants had a wrong notion of the causes of the disease. Their responses confirmed Esangbedo’s fear.
For instance, a mother, who came with her eight months old baby, Mrs. Anike Ajayi, said she had always believed that pneumonia was caused by uncontrolled exposure to cold weather, rain or water.
She said, “When I was growing up, my parents banned all my siblings from taking anything cold .Even our teachers warned us not to take cold drinks. They said it would cause pneumonia. I always tell my children to stay away from cold things. I make them eat hot meals and ensure they keep warm.”
Ajayi is not the only one with this wrong mindset about pneumonia. Many Nigerians have this wrong perception about the disease.
Also, a consultant paediatrician with the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi- Araba, Dr. Ekanem Ekure, said that pneumonia is caused by the Streptocucous Pneumoniae which is found in bacteria, fungi, virus and not cold water, weather or food.
She said, “As we have discovered here, many Nigerians do not know what truly causes pneumonia. We also conducted a survey for mothers in our clinic in LUTH, three quarter of them thought that pneumonia was caused by exposure to cold weather or water and the other quarter had not even heard of it.
“Pneumonia is the second killer of our children after malaria in Nigeria. It accounts for about 17 per cent of total infant mortality recorded yearly in the country, yet our mothers and fathers are ignorant of its causes and prevention.”
She noted that pnuemoniae is transmitted by inhaling germs from dirty environments or ingesting same through the mouth by eating contaminated fluids.
She said, “Pneumococcal infections occur when children or adults are exposed to germ and not cold weather. If it was due to cold, all the children in cold regions abroad would have contracted it by now.
“When this bacteria or virus gets into the body either through the mouth or other openings in the body,it goes to the gut and contaminates the blood and goes into the lungs to destroy some cells there. That is pneumonia.
“Parents must know that the way this bacteria or virus gets into the body is through germs contracted under poor sanitation and hygiene. It is not prevented or treated by wearing sweaters or keeping warm.”
Ekure, however, noted that children who are predisposed to this disease are those who have not been exclusively breastfed, who attend day care and crèches and are exposed to passive smoke from cigarettes, charcoal, firewood in their homes and those that miss out on routine immunisation.
Ekure said,“Mothers must make sure that the day care they take their children to is not the place where they can be exposed to germs.
“ A child with pneumonia in a creche where hygiene practices are poor will quickly infect others.”
She noted that to reduce the rate of pneumococcal infections, which according to her, kills 17 children every hour in the country, Nigerians must adopt improved hygienic lifestyles and increase vaccine intake for their children.
Ekure noted that though pneumococcal vaccine was not included in the routine immunisation this year, the Federal Government had included the Haemophilus Influenzae Type B vaccine which protects children against some types of pneumonia infections.
However, some of the mothers who spoke with our correspondent at the screening programme said they were yet to take some vaccines for their babies at the hospital because they were usually out of stock.
A mother, Mrs. Sidi Musbau, complained that after her third visits to the hospital immunise for her baby boy, she stopped going because nurses kept telling her to come back citing dearth of the vaccine as reason.
Speaking in Yoruba Language Musbau said, “ They give us dates to come for vaccination but when we get there, they will say it is finished, maybe just 10 children will be immunised that day. After my third unsuccessful attempt to get my child immunised, I decided to wait for the next time they will do mass immunisation in my area but the queue is usually too long.”
Responding to this, Ekure charged the Federal Government to improve vaccination coverage and also include the pneumococcal vaccine to encourage mothers to immunise their children against this disease.
She said, “Yes, sometimes last year there was the problem of stock and shortages in primary health centres but they are working on it.Mothers will not take their children to the clinics if they know they will not get it.”
She also called on government to increase access to safe water to help Nigerians adopt good hygiene such as hand washing which can reduce childhood diseases in the country.
“If we want more children to wash their hands, they must have access to safe and clean water in their homes and schools.
Another a consultant paediatrician, Dr. Olajide Ojo charged mothers to embrace exclusive breastfeeding to fight major diseases.
Ojo said, “The first immunisation God designed for babies is their mother’s breast milk. It naturally prevents and protects them from diseases. It is their right and it should not be denied them. Mothers should breast feed their babies exclusively which means not giving them water for the first six months of their lives.”

Blogger's Diary:Rebound Relationships,my story

So,I didn't plan on writing today(been experiencing writer's block recently). But, got into a huge argument with an acquaintance when I bluntly condemned her new relationship. Before you say,"wetin concern me",i'll tell you why.
She just met this cool, handsome dude who just got out of a 6 year relationship with his long term girlfriend.I told her the blunt truth"Your relationship wont last". She took offence. Of course she has every right to. She reminded me of who I was before.
The issue is,unless you are Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt.......

a rebound relationship is a no no.When I end a relationship, the next person I meet within the space of 3 months after the end of my relationship is just a rebound. That person you hang around with just to make you get overyour ex.(Chris Brown ,Karrauche, Rihanna ring a bell?)
Some are very lucky and end up loving and even getting married but that happens when your ex was a pain in the butt and you couldn't wait to get out.

So,a few questions are pertinent
-How did they breakup? Had they broken up emotionally long before the physical breakup?
-Does he still talk about his ex"That girl is a bitch",never going back to her"?
-Are they still friends?
-Have they broken up and gotten back together in the past?
-Has he invested so much in the past relationship

If the answers to these questions are in the negative, then you might have a chance of making it work.

Last year,I met this amazing guy and we hit it off pretty quick . When we started chatting, the first thing he said was"I used to have a girlfriend,we just broke up. I'm never going back to her". I ignored the warning signs and felt cool with myself. We started dating and i was gradually taking her place in his world(so I thought).

But I ignored the fact that he would indirectly talk about her most times(he never said anything positive though). He would make references to her annoying traits, and say, they always got back together after a while but this time,he hated her so much and could never go back. I would stupidly join in the insults and say things like"wow, how could she have insulted your mother,or how could she have been so rude to your friends?

I ignored the fact that his friend would refer to how madly inlove he used to be with her. I ignored the fact that, they were shocked he had fallen for another girl so soon.

I tried to be everything she was not. Then one day,we were at a party, and he just called me out and said"Do you know for the 1st time in my life,I'm forgetting about her?I can sleep without thinking of her and I promise you. I'm in love with you.Its over for good).

I recall shedding tears.Oh I finally got a young, yahoo rich, handsome boy who loved me.Then our relationship was on cloud 9.He spoilt me silly with gifts,attention,love...

Then something happened. His ex had apparently moved on. I found out her name and searched for her on facebook. She had posted some pictures with a new guy in a range rover sport.I was overjoyed that that chapter was closed for good.I decided to flaunt it in his face, just in case he thought she would never get over him.

So, I made the mistake or the best thing I could when I said"Dear have you seen the pictures ....posted on facebook? He was like what pics?I said of herself and one guy in a Range sport.
He was stunned. So stunned by the fact that she had moved on to someonericher. So,the silent competition began. He plastered my face allover all networking sites,he declared his love for me allover.
I was feeling like a queen.I was wrong. I was just a bait. The fact that she moved on rekindled his interest in her,as much as he hated her,he couldn't stand the thought of her being happy elsewhere.

She knew him,she knew he was seeing me,To get his attention, she had to feign happiness. So,as he intensified his fake love for me,she intensified her fake love for the other guy. Fast forward to 2 weeks later, as a sure girl i figured it out and called off the relationship(hell yeah,Dump him before he dumps you).
That placed me ahead . He couldn't believe it.So, he started chasing me and stopped chasing her.She noticed and started chasing him, coming to the house, crying, falling sick...no man alive can say no to a woman who's deeply inlove with him.

So,one day,I just took a good look at him,his lifestyle, mine and saw we were headed in two opposite places. It wasn't worth fighting for.

I decided to let him go.I decided to let her win.In the true sense of the word,I didn't let her win.She won.I was just the REBOUND.
They got married this month and I smiled to myself.Maybe I was just an instrument for the both of them to rekindle their love.Maybe I needed to come into the picture for them to realize what they had.
Looking at their pictures made me happy, no one would love him as she does. I'm happy with our relationship. We're now friends

Then my phone rang and this guy who had been asking me out calls.I answered excitedly and decided to go out on a date.
Fast forward to 10 mins later"he said"My EX girlfriend is a bitch. Im never going back to her". I smiled and asked"When did you break up with her again'"? Last week mennnn and im so glad I did coz i found you.

"Yea you found your single lonely ass" I said and walked out.
Na me you wan use do rebound abi?Thunder fire you(excuse my language)

Aftermath of ‘Bottom Belle’ Success, Omawumi Drops New Single

One of Nigeria’s prolific singers, Omawunmi is no doubt doing well in her chosen career and doing Nigeria proud. Few days back, the singer was the only artiste chosen from Nigeria to perform at the AFCON draw witnessed by South Africa President, CAF President, and other leading international lights. As usual, she gave out her best and got a standing ovation in return.

Not relenting on her oars after the great success recorded by her last single, Bottom Belle, the singer will be dropping her new single titled Stay Alive in matter of days. The single which will be released in audio and video format is another creative piece from the singer.

Fans will again be thrilled with this new release from the entertainer that borders on the need to relax and take things easy despite the hustle and bustle of life. “What I am saying in the song is that you need to just relax and take things easy because some people don't. Every day, you see people trying to acquire wealth or get to a level where they can forget their troubles. But the thing about it is that you just need to slow down a little. As long as you have the basic requirements of the three square meals, try to stay alive and be concerned about your well being before you concentrate on acquiring wealth”, Omawumi revealed.

Stay Alive is another single from the sophomore album and the versatile vocalist who has increasingly proved her competence in the music world is yet to make another landmark.

Finally, CBN Cancels N100 Charge On All ATM Transactions

The Central Bank of Nigeria and the Bankers Committee on Tuesday finally agreed to put a stop to all charges associated with the use of Automated Teller Machines.

The agreement was the highpoint of a meeting between the committee made up of Chief Executive Officers of Deposit Money Banks, and directors and top officials of the CBN.
At the end of the meeting, the Director, Banking Supervision Department, CBN, Mrs. Agnes Martins, addressed journalists in company with the Group Managing Director, Union Bank of Nigeria Plc, Mr. Emeka Emuwa; Group Managing Director, First Bank of Nigeria Plc, Mr. Bisi Onasanya; and acting Managing Director, Keystone Bank Limited, Dr. Shehu Muhammed.

Before now, account holders had been made to pay a flat rate of N100 per withdrawal any time they used ATMs other than the ones that belonged to their banks.

But Onasanya said the decision to stop the charge would help to increase the patronage of ATMs, thus deepening the financial inclusion strategy of the central bank.

He said the modalities for the stoppage were being worked out, adding that within the shortest time possible, the adjustments would be reflected on all the ATMs.

Cayenne Dreams by Mobola

She shut her eyes as the sun stretched its arms above her. “I’m so glad we took this trip, Mabel”

“Mabel?” she opened one eye by a sliver but her aunt was gone. She sat up and just as she was about to get up and search for her, a being eclipsed the sun on her behalf. Frowning she looked up at the being. ‘Bad idea’ her brain quickly warned. From his toes, to his toned, muscled thighs, to his broad chest, Janet gulped in awe.

“Are you a life guard? Is Mabel okay?” she managed to croak.

“Mabel.”He chuckled, and it sounded like the taste of airy milk chocolate.

“The little old lady over there winking at you?” he licked his lips in a way that made Janet want to jump his bones, right there and then.

“Yea, she’s my aunt!”

“Come with me.”He took her in him arms before she could protest or reply

Please put me down!" her brain said, but her lips uttered a soft moan.

There was a warmth in his arms that made her want to stay there in all manner of ways and positions.

She hardly noticed that they had walked away from the crowd and were all alone in a secluded part of the beach.

He dropped her then and she felt a sense of loss.

“I dont even know your name!”

“You dont need to know my name!” he licked his lips again and Janet melted on the inside, right in her middle, a warm puddle stirred.

“so what, we just stand here and stare at each other?”

“Your problem is that you think too much. Sssh”

Her heart began a tap-tarap-tap-tap kind of rhythm as this stranger inched a little closer.

He tipped her chin up in his palm and right before he kissed her, he stared into her eyes with such intent that a fire like warmth coursed through Janet, creating  a passionate need to be held.

His kiss was warm and sweet, like warm caramel,  yet heady and intoxicating.

You dont know this guy! What are you doing? Jay, you’re engaged!” Her brain tapped and wiggled around her skull.

Janet pulled back and shuddered.

“I’m so sorry, I dont know what that was.”

He chuckled and pulled her closer and kissed her again.

Warning bells jingled and jangled in her head but the passion burning inside her pushed them all to silence.

“Does he feel like I think he does?”

Janet traced his arms with her hand and a moan escaped her throat.

“Damn! Why do you have to be so foine!”

Her shirt was on the beach, his shirt was on the beach. The water, pulled and pushed around their feet, the saltiness inflaming their passion.

His arms pulled her closer and his kiss drowned her in a drunken passion.

“You’re engaged! You’re engaged! Stop now!”

Janet sighed, “Just a little more, please” nibbling on his lips and sliding her tongue into his mouth.

Mustering some courage she slipped her hands into his pants and gasped.

“Stop now! You’re engaged”

Janet’s eyes opened as must as Eve’s in the garden of Eden.

She looked him dead in the eye, as he playfully stroked her shoulder, right through the middle of her chest, past her navel and BINGO, the softest, musshiest, loveliest part of her being, warm, sweet, wet….

“Stop now! You’re engaged!”
